Introduction to Judo Belt Promotions
Judo belt promotions reflect a student's growth in skill, knowledge, and character. While each rank has general expectations—such as minimum time-in-grade, technical proficiency, and age guidelines—individual progress may vary.
Promotions may also consider competition experience, teaching & volunteer contributions, and overall commitment to the art of Judo. Senseis may award half-belts to recognize meaningful progress when a judoka is advancing but not yet ready for the next full rank. These transitional belts—often denoted by a combination of two colors—serve as encouragement and a marker of development.
These guidelines are a flexible framework, allowing senseis to recognize development beyond standardized criteria when appropriate. It's a journey, not a race.
